Fed: Wendy Craik appointed new head of NCC

CANBERRA, Dec 18 AAP - Wendy Craik has been appointed president of the National Competition
Council (NCC) despite the anger of some states about big cuts to competition payments
this year.

Dr Craik, who is acting NCC president, recommended fines and suspensions worth more
than $180 million over failures to deregulate industries like liquor sales in NSW and
shop trading hours in WA.

But federal Treasurer Peter Costello said Dr Craik had won support of the required
majority of states and territories to take on the role on a permanent basis.

"All appointments to the council have received majority support of the states and territories,"

he said.
