Vic: Review calls for speed limit overhaul

Speed limit buffer zones outside country towns and on urban fringes will be dropped
.. under a proposed overhaul of speed zones before the Victorian government.

A report from the government's Speed Limits Advisory Group .. currently before Transport
Minister PETER BATCHELOR .. recommends the removal of 80kph buffer zones between the 100
and 60k zones in appropriate locations.

They'll be replaced with new "60 ahead" signs .. similar to the ones in NSW.





The report also says controversial permanent 40k zones outside schools should only
apply to daylight hours.

RACV public policy general manager KEN OGDEN .. a member of the advisory group .. says
the motoring body's concerned at a lack of consistency .. too many changes of speed zones
on some roads and poor speed signposting.

He says many drivers are confused about what speed zone they're in.

Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner (Traffic) NOEL ASHBY says police support the review.
