Strategy Analytics: Surging Mobile Data Revenues Paint Over Cracks in Voice Market
Type: News

While mobile data revenues accelerated on the back of growing smartphone adoption, the mobile voice market recorded its largest annual decline in the first quarter of 2011.

According to the latest report from Strategy Analytics, "Wireless Operator Performance Benchmarking, Q1 2011," the rate of growth in mobile service revenues faltered last quarter when voice revenues dropped by nearly 3 percent.
Strategy Analytics Wireless Operator Strategies (WOS) research, which tracks the operational and financial performance of over 200 mobile operators, accounting for over 75 percent of global subscribers, found that non-messaging data services contributed all of the growth in mobile data revenues and now represent over 61 percent of the total.

"For mobile operators, the Mobile Internet is the new engine for revenue growth. But it comes with a challenging impact on resources," said Sue Rudd, Director of Service Provider Analysis at Strategy Analytics. "While operators are still early in the cycle of managing and optimizing those loads, smartphones and tablets are joining USB modems to put huge strains on mobile network capacity."

Phil Kendall, Director, Wireless Operator Strategies, and author of the report, adds, "Mobile operators need to remain vigilant in balancing voice, SMS and data pricing to maximize revenues and maintain profitability. The very growth in data revenues, coming from smartphones with bundled voice and data plans, undermines some of the value in the voice market. Operators must tread cautiously in order to avoid chasing smartphone growth at any price."

Strategy Analytics provides market intelligence focused on opportunities and disruptive forces.

CANBERRA, Feb 15 AAP - Pressure is growing within the federal coalition for Prime Minister
John Howard to do more to ensure Guantanamo Bay inmate David Hicks is brought to trial
very soon.

Liberal MP Michael Johnson has written to Mr Howard saying five years is a very long
time for someone to be imprisoned without trial.

"I've written to the prime minister to encourage him to leverage the US administration
to bring David Hicks home and to consider his trial timeframe," Mr Johnson told ABC radio
today.

"I think it is about time that this matter was extradicted."

Western Australian MP Don Randall is another coalition member pushing for Hicks' trial.

He told ABC radio that Mr Howard should use his good relationship with US President

Vic: Civil libertarian slams Thomas control order

MELBOURNE, Aug 29 AAP - Civil liberty campaigners fear an interim control order placed
on accused terrorist Jack Thomas could disadvantage him in any future trial.

An interim order was yesterday issued against Mr Thomas, on holiday in eastern Victoria,
limiting his movements.

It was the first time the federal attorney-general had sought an interim control order
under the new terrorism laws after the Victorian Court of Appeal had quashed convictions
against Thomas.

Speaking today on ABC radio, Liberty Victoria president Brian Walters SC, raised the
possibility the control order would work against Mr Thomas in any future trial.

Federal police are seeking a retrial based on an interview he gave to the ABC's Four
Corners program.

"If he is to get into the witness box before the magistrate and answer this fresh set
of allegations, that evidence he gives will be admissible against him on any subsequent
trial," Mr Walters said.

"One wonders whether the real purpose of this proceeding isn't to place him in an impossible
tactical situation in relation to the proposed further trial."

Mr Walters said the federal police deserved strong criticism for their treatment of Mr Thomas.

"It's clear that he was subject to emotional manipulation by Australian authorities,
the court so found," he said.

"I think the real fear is not from somebody who suffered psychiatric harm in the way
Jack Thomas has as a result of his treatment.

"The real fear is the danger that the authorities will abuse that power for improper
purposes and destroy our civil liberties in the process.

"This use of the new control orders in this way is an example of just how dangerous they can be."

Mr Thomas was convicted in February on charges of receiving funds from al-Qaeda and
holding a false passport. But the Victorian Court of Appeal earlier this month quashed
the convictions against the Muslim convert and overturned a five-year jail sentence imposed
on him.

Vic: Cabinet split over ID cards - report

MELBOURNE, April 22 AAP - Federal ministers responsible for national security opposed
compulsory identity cards when the prime minister tabled the idea after the London bombings
in July last year, an investigation reveals.

Ministerial correspondence obtained by The Age newspaper shows Justice Minister Chris
Ellison wrote that the identity cards "pose a number of security and privacy problems".

Senator Ellison wrote to constituents, saying: "The government does not believe a national
identity card is the best way to increase the security of all Australians."

"A national identity card could also increase the risk of identity theft, as only one
document would have to be counterfeited.

"A single database containing everyone's personal details would also be at risk from
hackers, no matter how well it was secured."

Attorney-General Philip Ruddock had ruled out the introduction of the cards just two
weeks before the idea was tabled by John Howard.

A public inquiry into ID cards has since been stalled because of political divisions.

Instead, Human Services Minister Joe Hockey's proposal for a new "smartcard", which
allows electronic access to Medicare and other government services, has been the preferred
talking point on the national agenda.

A ministerial document, obtained under freedom of information laws, shows the proposed
smartcard and any form of national ID are closely linked.

"Should the government introduce a national ID card, it would likely be the prime authentication
token for gaining access to government and private sector services," the report said.

A spokesman for Mr Ruddock would not be interviewed about ID cards but said he would
like to see information on the cards' benefits versus the costs.

Speed limit buffer zones outside country towns and on urban fringes will be dropped

A report from the government's Speed Limits Advisory Group .. currently before Transport
Minister PETER BATCHELOR .. recommends the removal of 80kph buffer zones between the 100

They'll be replaced with new "60 ahead" signs .. similar to the ones in NSW.

Fed: Govt gives $500,000 for cerebral palsy research

SYDNEY, Aug 19 AAP - Prime Minister John Howard has announced $500,000 federal government
funding to further cerebral palsy research.

Mr Howard made the announcement at the Spastic Centre's diamond anniversary ball in Sydney.

Mr Howard and his wife Janette joined a crowd of 400 at the Grand Ballroom at Luna
Park to celebrate the organisation's 60th birthday.

The funding would go to the establishment of the Cerebral Palsy Foundation, which will
be run by the Spastic Centre.

The foundation will fund research, treatment and prevention strategies for the condition,
which has no known cure.

"As an additional source of support I'm very pleased to announce the commonwealth government
will contribute $500,000 to the foundation," Mr Howard told the crowd.

The Spastic Centre was established by Audrie and Neil McLeod in 1945 to support people
with Cerebral Palsy, a physical condition that affects movement.

Mr Howard said the centre's pioneering work had done Australia proud.

Entertainer Jimmy Barnes and his daughter Elly-May, who has cerebral palsy, performed
at the function later.

NEW LENOX DOT.COM STARTUP BUYING ACTIONFAX

NEW LENOX -- Local Internet company eKiosk.com on Tuesday acquired ActionFax, a facsimile service with more than 400 locations at airports and airline clubs. The acquisition creates a new wave of growth for e.Kiosk.com, which expects to add about 3,000 locations this year.

New Lenox-based e.Kiosk.com provides public Internet access.

Its main product line is computer kiosks placed in hotels, universities and amusement parks for public use.

Launched in July, the company has eKiosks in a number of major hotel chains, including Hyatt, Sheraton and Westin.

The acquisition of Atlanta-based Continental Fax Corp., the owner of ActionFax, increases eKiosk.com's reach into the business-to-business Internet market, eKiosk.com founder and Chief Executive Officer Don Heidrich said.

"Our eKiosks will bring corporate suppliers and buyers together when they are away from their offices," Heidrich said in a statement announcing the acquisition.

"ActionFax's airport and airline club locations help to put us exactly where we need to be to capture a significant share of this market."

ActionFax has service centers at airports, including JFK International Airport in New York and Dallas International Airport, and a number of airline clubs, including Delta Airlines Crown Room Clubs and Japan Airlines Clubs.

The ActionFax acquisition is one of two deals that eKiosk.com expects will greatly increase its public presence this year.

The company has eKiosks at about 130 locations now, said David Luck, vice president for marketing.

But a recent contract with Hilton Hotel Corp. should increase the number of eKiosk locations to about 3,000 by the end of this year, Luck said.

The company describes as its goal, "To become the `pay phone' of the 21st century" by providing the predominant electronic kiosk company in high-traffic public places.

Electronic kiosks offer hotel guests and other users access to the Internet while away from their personal computers.

At amusement parks, including Six Flags locations, eKiosk.com also has photographic capabilities, allowing visitors to e-mail pictures to family and friends.

Although less than a year old, the company spent five years on product development.

Nurtured by Heidrich, the company also has attracted investors from other parts of the country, Luck said.

The company has a West Coast office in Los Altos, Calif., and an East Coast office in Union City, N.J.

The company has 41 employees and a small manufacturing operation.

But Luck said eKiosk.com is locating a site for a new manufacturing facility in the New Lenox area.

MAYBE THE HARDEST PART OF GROWING OLD IS FINDING RIGHT WORD TO DESCRIBE IT.(VIRGINIA BEACH BEACON)

When I was still a very young man - at this point in my life any age before 50 is very young - a clerk in a motel asked if I were a member of AARP.

The sigh that came from deep inside me must have sounded like Al Gore reacting to a George Bush remark in the first presidential debate. I knew what AARP meant. It meant old. Finished. Retired.

I was 46 and still working.

Later, my wife partially rescued my ego by pointing out that anyone 50 or over is eligible for AARP membership. In four years, I'd be 50. So I didn't look much older than I was.

Such are the consolation prizes one receives as the hair turns gray and the eyesight dims.

Why do we need consolation as we grow old? Growing old is natural. It is peaceful in a way. It is soothing and comfortable.

It is also awful, which is why people keep trying to invent ways to cushion the blow.

Consider, for example, the New York couple with a Web site and a contest. The contest isn't about winning money or a trip for two on a slow boat to China, or even a free life membership in AARP.

These folks want another word for retirement. Or as they put it, a word to describe life after work. They think the word retirement sounds too much like life in a rocking chair, which isn't too shabby when you stop to think about it.

Words such as ``graduation'' and ``renaissance'' have been suggested by contestants who feel that life begins at sixty-something.

As a part-timer who has retired from two places and gone back to work for both, I enjoy the best of worlds. I work some; I rock some.

I would like to enter the contest anyway, because on my days off, I feel retired, graduated or whatever. Here are my suggested replacement words for retirement. It should be noted that they apply only to those who have truly stopped work altogether.

Unemployed. This is the most natural word to describe what happens after work. It does not, however, make you eligible for unemployment insurance - only Social Security.

Reclined. The perfect word to describe the lives of those people who spend all their time in an easy chair. Only one recliner in America isn't eligible to use this term. This is the man who is employed by a chair company to spend eight hours a day testing the comfort of its recliners. I'll swear I read a newspaper story about this guy. When he graduates, I intend to apply for his job.

Rich. This is probably the most desirable word. However, you must be a Republican to reach this point in life.

Stiff. No, I don't mean deceased. I mean stiff as in your backbone creaks when you want it to swivel.

Reinvented. Al the sigher invented the Internet and reinvented government. It's a good word.

Eating. This is about all you're good at anymore.

Sleeping. You do it all day because you can't go to sleep at night when you're old no matter how tired you happen to be.

Worried. Will I outlive my money? That's what the financial experts say old folks worry most about. Not me. I worry most about not outliving the money, which can't last much longer at the rate it gets away from you.

Finally, my last entry in the contest to discover a word to replace retirement is . . .

Sad. I'd like to be 46 again and worried about looking old enough to be joining AARP for the first time.

People have to remember that they have to switch off their engine and lock the door before they leave the vehicle," said Lieutenant Colonel Ali Ahmed Ghanim, Director of Naif Police Station.A "If you're caught violating this, you will be fined dhs300."

Dubai Police has launched a four-day campaign to educate people on the issue under the slogan "Do Not Leave the Vehicle On". Ghanim said the police were going to issue "tens of thousands of flyers and brochures bearing messages mainly for drivers".A Some of the flyers contain messages such as: 'Do not be one of those 1,960 motorists who were fined in 2007 for leaving their vehicles switched on'.

"We have to tell them of the dangers of doing so," he said. Ghanim said leaving the engine running is an environmental hazard as well as being an encouragement to thieves.
